There and Back
Starting at the Grotto Falls Trailhead in Hyalite Canyon, this moderate route follows the well traveled Hyalite Creek Trail past several notable waterfalls including Grotto, Arch, and Silken Skein Falls. The path climbs gradually through dense conifer forest and intermittent alpine meadows, with steady elevation gain and several creek crossings. Around halfway in, the trail opens up to views of surrounding peaks, including Palace Butte to the south.
To reach Champagne Falls, continue along the main trail until nearing the upper reaches of Hyalite Creek, then watch for a faint spur trail breaking off to the climber’s right. This spur can be hard to spot and may require some route-finding through brush and overgrown terrain. The final approach involves a rugged section with loose rock and minor scrambling.
Though no permits are needed, bear activity is common. Carry bear spray and use proper food storage practices. This route is best hiked from June through October, with lingering snow and muddy conditions possible early in the season. The reward is a secluded view of Champagne Falls tumbling over a series of ledges in a narrow canyon above the main drainage.
