Loop
Starting from the parking area on Silver Street in Sheffield, Massachusetts, the Lime Kiln Loop and its adjoining trails wind through the scenic grounds of a Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary. The main Lime Kiln Loop forms a short, easy route through open hayfields and mixed forest, with views of a historic lime kiln, a dry farm pond, and occasional wetland sections. Just off this loop, the Quarry Trail heads southwest into denser woods, passing limestone outcrops and shallow quarry pits. At the next junction, turn right onto the Taconic Vista Trail, which climbs gently to an open bench with views of Mount Everett and the surrounding Berkshire and Taconic ridgelines. From there, continue onto the Ovenbird Trail to reconnect with the Quarry Trail and return to the starting point.
An optional side trip on the Boulder Spur leads to a large perched glacial boulder and a peaceful meadow overlook. Terrain throughout the area is generally easy to moderate, with rolling elevation and occasional muddy stretches in low-lying areas. All trails are foot-traffic only, and closures may occur due to flooding or active beaver habitat. This quiet network offers a rewarding half-day hike with geological interest, varied habitats, and expansive ridgeline views.
