Description
There are multiple access points to the Dora Trail, but the most popular is the free parking area in downtown Pulaski at the Pulaski Train Station and Kiwanis Park. Head east through Kiwanis Park and continue along the signed Dora Trail. Stay on the main trail and please respect private property (the Dora Trail is adjacent to several backyards) and the property of the railroad. At 0.8 miles, the trail crosses the Dora Highway and switches from pavement to crushed stone. The trail quickly recrosses to the north side of the Dora Hwy and passes through Heritage Park. The trail winds alongside Peak Creek. The only downside to the trail is when it passes beside Pulaski's Wastewater Treatment Plant, which sometimes gives off smells for a short distance. Quickly pass it by and travel under Hwy 99 and the New River Trail trestle to curve up and around to the Dora Trail's junction with the New River Trail after 2.5 miles. Taking the New River Trail to the right takes you 0.5 miles to the northern terminus of the New River Trail State Park (there is also parking here for a small fee that supports the New River Trail State Park, which is worth supporting). Taking a left at the junction will quickly take you across the first of many trestles on the New River Trail and in the direction of the town of Draper and Galax 56+ miles away to the south. This is a multi-use trail with bikers and horses. Be sure to give the right of way to horses and move off the trail and stop to let them pass by.
