Description
Beazell Memorial Forest, located just outside of Philomath in Kings Valley, is a great place for short hikes and bird watching, with various trail options. The Plunkett Creek Loop Trail is just about 1.5 miles in length. It starts after crossing the wooden bridge just past the old barn. Turn right and follow the South Ridge Trail for a short distance. There will be a sign for the Plunkett Creek Loop Trail on the right as it follows the creek up a canyon to the open meadow. You can choose to head back on the Plunkett Creek Loop or, for a longer hike, continue on to the South Ridge Trail. The South Ridge Trail also connects with the South Meadow Trail to make just over a 3-mile loop through old-growth forests, open meadows, and along a small creek. For a shorter hike, check out the Bird Loop Trail, which is just under a mile long. After crossing the wooden bridge, turn left to find the trailhead. All trails are well maintained, but trail conditions can be muddy and scattered with debris during the winter months. Some trails are multi-use, while others are for hiking only. Also located on the site is the Plunkett family house, which dates back to 1875. The barn has been converted into an Education Center and is popular for events such as weddings and school field trips. The Education Center can be rented through the Benton County Parks Department (541.766.6871). Amenities onsite include flush toilets, drinking water and picnic tables.
