There and Back
Beginning in old-growth forest, the trail climbs gently to a junction at 1.0 miles. The route goes left here, on Dickey Lake #549, passing Dickey Lake at 1.5 miles. Soon after, the trail climbs out of the Dickey Lake Basin, meeting the Bull of the Woods Trail #550 at 2.0 miles. At this junction, you make a right and hike along the ridge, the trail running gently up the ridge and opening up views as you cross a few talus slopes. Eventually, the trail switchbacks twice, giving you views of both Jefferson and Hood. A short steeper section brings you to the lookout, with its rock gardens and expansive views. Retrace the route to return to the trailhead.
The !Bull of the Woods Lookout is locked and no longer used, having been last used in 1963. The trail passes through the Bull of the Woods Wilderness Area, established in 1984.
