Description
First Falls can be reached along Big Pine Creek North Fork Trail and is an easy day hike from the Big Pine Creek Recreation Area. The creek and falls are fed by the some of the southernmost glaciers in the United States. The area is home to some of the best trout fishing in the Sierra Nevada, and First Lake through Seventh Lake and Big Pine Creek above First Falls provide ample opportunity for anglers. High above First Falls lies several peaks over 14,000 feet along the Palisade Crest, part of the Great Western Divide. During the day the First Falls Trail through Big Pine Creek Canyon can be hot as it faces due south, though there is plenty of water along the way to be filtered, provided by Big Pine Creek North Fork. Part way to First Falls is a day use area shaded by tall pine and nestled along the creek. There is a small backcountry campsite near the falls if you want to stay overnight or have lunch and relax between hiking. Big Pine Creek Campground, situated along Big Pine Creek, is a perfect place to stay near the trailhead and start your hike. The tall old-growth pine forest keeps the campground shaded, while the sound of aspen leaves blowing in the wind sets a peaceful mood. Also, Glacier Lodge, store, and restaurant sits along Big Pine Creek at 8,000 feet. Here you can get food from the restaurant, or rent a cabin, or pitch a tent to stay the night. Enjoy your hike to beautiful First Falls along Big Pine Creek North Fork.
