Description
This 10.8-mile loop leads to the top of Mount San Antonio (aka Mount Baldy), whose 10,064-foot summit is the highest point in the San Gabriel Mountains. The mountain is located within Los Angeles County, about 14 miles north of Upland and 48 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The hike begins at the Manker Flat Campground and ascends the Baldy Bowl / Ski Hut Trail #7W02, skirting the eastern boundary of Sheep Mountain Wilderness. The route is steep and challenging with nearly 4,000 feet of elevation gain. It features a waterfall, scenic mountain views, and pristine nature. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and the route can be used for hiking, running, and backpacking.Street parking is available along Mount Baldy Road, near the trailhead, however, it does get crowded on the weekends. Begin by hiking up Falls Road, a wide dirt path located north of Manker Flats Campground. Within about 1/2 a mile you'll pass San Antonio Falls, turn sharply, and continue up the road. Look for the Baldy Bowl Trail on the left (it is easy to miss) and follow the trail up the east side of San Antonio Creek. In about 2.5 miles, you will reach the San Antonio Ski Hut, which the Sierra Club built and owns. With its scenic vista and outside benches, the hut is a great place to take a break. The trail continues to the west and then up the south ridge of the mountain to the summit. The trail descends via Devil's Backbone Trail, passing through Baldy Notch Ski Area, and loops back to the trailhead via Mount Baldy Road.VEGETATIONMost of the terrain is pine forest, with patches of sparsely vegetated chaparral and oak savannah.PERMITS AND CAMPINGThis route takes you through San Antonio Canyon as well as the Cucamonga Wilderness.
