Description
The L.V. Yates Trail, located in Phoenix, Arizona, is a popular destination for hikers seeking a moderately challenging experience in the picturesque Phoenix Mountain Preserve. This trail is part of the larger network of trails in the preserve. The L.V. Yates Trail, designated as Trail 8A, spans 5.1 miles round trip. It is well-marked and features a mix of rocky terrain, sandy washes, and gradual inclines, making it accessible for hikers of varying skill levels. The trail is named after L.V. Yates, a dedicated local conservationist who played a significant role in preserving the natural beauty of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. From the 40th Street trailhead hikers will leave to the south. The trailhead has a spicket but otherwise there are no amenities for hikers so they should come prepared. Hikers will take off to the south through the park and for the first mile hikers will have a moderate incline. Hikers will then have a short but steep climb up to a saddle that lasts about three tenths of a mile. From there, hikers will immediately descend. This portion of the trail is stunning as hikers will be removed of any views of the city. Hikers will then get a stretch of flat trail before climbing to the end of the trail. Once hikers reach the end of the climb, they will have views to the south. This is the end to the LV Yates trail however, if they want, they can add milage and continue along other trails within the preserve. When hikers are ready, they can return to the trailhead the way they came. The L.V. Yates Trail is especially popular during the cooler months, when the temperatures are more conducive to hiking. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the most pleasant conditions, with the added benefit of seeing the sunrise or sunset over the desert landscape.
