Description
Muir Peak Loop is a 10-mile loop trail in Angeles National Forest located east of Altadena, California. The loop features challenging climbs and scenic ridgelines. The climb to Muir Peak is rugged and less crowded than some of the nearby trails. The views are spectacular from the top, and the descent follows a well-maintained singletrack. This loop is ideal for someone seeking a little more solitude along a rugged and rocky trail. The trail is suitable for running, hiking, and backpacking. The loop begins with the Rubio Canyon Trail. The trail descends into a canyon, climbs back up, and connects to the Lone Tree Trail. Continue up the Lone Tree Trail which eventually leads to the Mt. Lowe Firebreak, then to Muir Peak. From Rubio Canyon up to Muir Peak you are hiking mostly along a ridgeline and the terrain is rugged and rocky. After Muir Peak, the trails are well maintained and much more popular. Take a moment to appreciate the stunning panoramic views from the top of Muir Peak (4,688 feet). To the west, you can see beyond the hillsides of the San Gabriel Mountains, past the city of Los Angeles, and out to the Pacific Ocean. It is even possible to see Catalina Island on a clear day. As you look north, you can see San Gabriel Peak and Mount Lowe. And, to the east you have more views of prominent local peaks such as Mount Wilson. After leaving Muir Peak, head to Inspiration Point (another great spot for views) and the Sam Merrill Trail. Although the trail is still rocky at times, it is well maintained and easy to follow. To return to Rubio Canyon, descend the Sam Merrill Trail and take the Altadena Crest Trail.WATERThere may be some seasonal water along this loop, but it is best to bring and carry and all that you need. If you do collect water from rivers or streams be sure to treat it before consumption.PARKINGParking is available on neighborhood streets near Rubio Canyon.ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONAngeles National Forest: https://www.fs.usda.gov/angeles.
