Mammoth Pass to Duck Lake

Mammoth Pass to Duck Lake is a 16-mile out-and-back hike located outside of Mammoth Lakes. It is an adventurous trail that offers 360-degree views to hikers along its singletrack ridgeline route. It offers alpine lakes, lush meadows, and interesting geologic features that make it popular with trail runners, hikers, and backpackers. The route is accessible throughout most of the year, but it is particularly popular during the summer.Mammoth Pass Trailhead, which features bathrooms, picnic areas, and plenty of parking, is the starting point of the route. From the trailhead, you will climb steeply towards Mammoth Pass, gaining almost 500 feet in half a mile. After passing McLeod Lake, the trail levels out and reaches Mammoth Pass. At 1.2 miles, you will reach a junction and turn south on the Mammoth Rim Trail. As you travel along the Mammoth Rim Trail, you will be rewarded with panoramic views overlooking the Mammoth Lakes basin. The Mammoth Rim Trail continues to roll for approximately seven miles until it reaches the turnaround point at Duck Lake. Duck Lake is a high elevation alpine lake with mesmerizing blue waters, lush meadows, and interesting geologic features. The trail is a mix of sand and dirt with some rocky sections. This route is challenging and visually stunning with scenic views throughout!Water is sparse along the Rim Trail so make sure to carry what you need and be prepared to filter or treat any water you collect from the lake.
