Description
This paved multi-use path is part of the Wood River Trail System. It can be done in sections, in any direction, and is well marked with wooden signposts at each junction, making getting lost a near impossibility. From the junction of Highway 75 and Saddle Road, the path begins with a mildly steep ascent paralleling the heavy car traffic on Saddle Road. Although walkers should beware of cars pulling out of side streets, residents are patient and very courteous to path users. Continue from Saddle Road straight ahead on Dollar Road and pass the picturesque Sun Valley Lake. Use caution at the right-hand crossing onto Elkhorn Road. The gradual hill that climbs next to the Dollar Mountain ski slopes and the Elkhorn Golf Course is the main challenge on this path, but the views along the way are spectacular. Upon reaching the top, enjoy a scenic descent down to the junction of Elkhorn Road and Morning Star Road. For a shorter, more level walk: continue straight on Elkhorn Road. To add a 150 foot hill over 1.75 miles, take a left on Morning Star Road for a bonus jaunt on this quiet residential road before rejoining Elkhorn Road. Prepare yourself for the most enjoyable part of this path as it leaves the neighborhoods behind and descends the gentle Elkhorn Gulch wetland area. The path crosses bridges and alternately meanders through open fields and groves of trees. Pass through a tunnel under Highway 75 to join the Wood River Trail System. Note: bikes are allowed on this trail.
