Marvine Lake Trail

This trailhead is nestled in the western Flat Tops with two Forest Service campgrounds within a half mile. The trail is well defined and alternates from singletrack to a width sufficient for two or three people. The first mile leads through rolling forest and then opens up to a valley that you will continue along for the next 3 miles. The canyons on either side of the valley boast fantastic scenery, especially by the middle of September when the fall colors are particularly superb. You will encounter approximately six river crossings along the way; some require rock hopping, while others require balancing on log bridges. For the last 2 miles of the hike the trail turns slightly steeper (but no more than a moderate slope) and follows under pine and aspen groves for a bit more shade. Finally the trail arrives at Marvine Lake, which is large and emerald in color and is a great spot for a rest. Backcountry camping sites are located off trail just before arriving at Marvine Lake for those who want an overnight trip. Otherwise, head back the way you came for a there-and-back day trip.
