Rachel Lake

Rachel Lake is far from any city life or even busy streets. Since this hike is so secluded and can continue up to Rampart Lakes, this is popular destination amongst overnight backpackers. Starting from the trailhead, the incline begins at moderate difficulty. There are a few switchbacks, some rocks, and tree roots to go over. You'll find a trail junction not far from the trailhead; the left branch leads to Rachel lake. There are occasional glimpses of the creek and some waterfalls for the first mile. The grade then levels and continues through a Box Canyon after passing through some old-growth Douglas Fir and Hemlock trees and salmonberry, devil's club, and fern understory. While in the brush there will be another junction: Straight will lead to the end of the road, while the trials continues left. The trail then goes back to old-growth forest, and the steep incline begins.The last mile is extremely steep, and with tons of downed trees and rocky, wet, tree root covered terrain, the trail gets difficult. There are many streams to cross, but the trail follows the Cross Canyon Creek with amazing views of waterfalls. At the top of the trail there are a number of campsites and lake views. There is also a sign that indicates the route that continues to Rampart Ridge and Rampart Lakes.
