There and Back
There's no question that the Eagle Cap Wilderness offers unparalleled hiking opportunities, but many of the trails are a bit long or require overnight backpacking. BC Falls near Wallowa State Park is a short, ideal family-friendly trail for those staying in the park or nearby. In just under 3 miles this trail packs in two rivers, Wallowa Lake views, and BC Falls. The trail to BC Falls starts on the Chief Joseph Trail and is shared with the West Fork Wallowa River Trail. The trails split at the quarter-mile mark, so follow the gentle right-hand fork. You'll come to the Wallowa River crossing in about a half mile. Once you cross the bridge, you'll start to gain a little elevation as you make your way up the switchbacks. About a mile from the river BC Creek creates a waterfall that cascades down across the trail. At one point there was a bridge here allowing hikers to cross BC Creek and continue to impressive views of Wallowa Lake and to the summit of the 10,000-foot peak of Chief Joseph Mountain. If you choose to cross the creek, proceed with caution as the rocks are quite slippery.
