MacGregor Falls Trail

Reach the start of this secluded trail either by hiking the old fire road through ranch land from MacGregor Ave or take Black Canyon Trail to where the spur to "the Pear" branches off, then trek overland south to the old fire road. This old doubletrack roughly parallels Black Canyon Creek which is the outflow from MacGregor Falls. In the meadows, you may see wildflowers and should get good views of Long's Peak, Flattop Mountian and Hallett Peak. You can often watch rock climbers scale the beautiful formations of Lumpy Ridge. Once on the actual trail to MacGregor Falls, the forest becomes denser and the canyon narrows. The gently ascending trail is easy to follow here, but is not maintained and gets little traffic. Pass a couple of small "teaser" cascades. After a horse hitching post, the crashing MacGrgegor Falls comes into view. Standing further away allows for views of the entire falls, the closer you get to the water, the more the rocks and walls obscure the top. There is often deadfall across parts of the falls. The trail ends at the falls, so retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
