Description
The Bright Angel Trail to Havasupai Gardens is a premier hiking route descending from the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. As one of the park's primary corridor trails, it is well-maintained and heavily traveled by both hikers and mule trains. This route covers approximately 4.7 miles one-way, with an elevation descent of about 3,060 feet, ending at Havasupai Gardens. Starting near the Bright Angel Lodge at an elevation of 6,806 feet, the trail quickly drops below the rim, navigating winding switchbacks through sheltered alcoves. These upper sections are more shaded and less steep than the South Kaibab Trail, passing through two stone tunnels within the first 0.75 miles. As the trail descends, hikers pass the 1.5-Mile and 3-Mile Resthouses, both of which offer shade and seasonal water. The destination, Havasupai Gardens, is situated at 3,772 feet and features a year-round spring, picnic areas, a ranger station, and a campground. While the descent is relatively easy, the return trip back up to the South Rim is demanding, requiring significant physical effort and typically double the travel time. During the winter, the upper two miles of the trail are often covered in ice and snow, making traction devices and trekking poles essential.
