The low end of this trail is easily accessed at Earl's Trailhead, which is across the street from the The Sun Valley Club (golfcourse clubhouse). There is a sizable parking lot at the clubhouse. The Sun Valley Club and Earl's Trailhead are located off of Trail Creek Road, about a mile east of the stop-light intersection at Trail Creek Road and Saddle Road. Elk Trail climbs north, then west to reach its intersection with Selgren's Trail above the Big Wood Subdivision. Most of the climbing is at a grade of 5% or less, with some brief steeper sections coming in at about 7-8%.
The trail surface is generally quite smooth with smaller protruding rocks and a couple of places where the tread crosses drainages and somewhat more complicated terrain. Overall, an easy trail.
