Description
This former forest road runs north-south along the length of the Walhalla Glades area. The lengthy route is surrounded on three sides by the Grand Canyon. The geography of the peninsula also lends it a unique climate- warm updrafts from the canyon keep the area warmer than most others on the North Rim, allowing more hospitable living and growing conditions for ancient peoples. From the pull off along !Cape Royal Road, the Walhalla Glades Trail descends gradually over rolling grassy terrain. It initially parallels the road before bending away through open fields of burned snags. Soon, the Francois Matthes trail branches off to the right, heading southwest. The Walhalla Glades Trail continues south through alternating open fields of burned pines and more wooded areas. The Walhalla Connector junction is next, followed by a long stretch where the path makes its closest approach to the canyon rim. After another couple of miles, the trail ends near the southernmost point of the peninsula, across from !Cape Royal and The !Angels Window overlook area.
