Loop
Starting from the trailhead off Jug End Road in Egremont, this moderate route travels through a mix of open fields, dense hardwoods, and shaded hemlock groves within the Jug End State Reservation. Hikers begin on a blue-blazed path that quickly enters a broad meadow with sweeping views of the surrounding Berkshire hills. After heading right out of the parking area and crossing a small footbridge over Fenton Brook, the trail enters thicker forest and gradually climbs toward a high point in the loop. At a clearly marked junction, hikers can stay left to complete the standard route or veer right onto the Upper Loop, which adds elevation and extends the route by about a mile. Both options reconnect later and descend through forested terrain, passing a historic stone chimney—one of the trail’s most distinctive landmarks.
The trail can become muddy in places, especially after rain or in spring. Bring your own drinking water and keep dogs leashed. This area is also open to hunting in season, so wearing bright colors is advised. Whether you take the shorter or longer route, this hike offers a peaceful mix of terrain, varied ecosystems, and classic New England views.
