Description
To get to this trail, park at the Maple Hollow Trailhead and head southeast on the South Maple Hollow Trail through the underpass under Highland Boulevard. The trails then split, with the South Maple Hollow Trail continuing to the right and the Eagle Crest Trail starting to the left (it is well signed). The trail starts out pretty flat and even drops slightly in elevation as the trail goes into a drainage and crosses a small stream. After this, the trail starts to ascend slowly out of the drainage and towards a ridge, going in and out of small maple and scrub oak forests. At about 3/4 mile in, the trail gets out onto an open hillside, which allows for some good views of Utah Lake and into the cities of Utah Valley, as well as some good views of Box Elder Peak and Mount Timpanogos. After about one mile, the trail reaches the Eagle Crest Trailhead, which is also the apex of the route. After passing by this trailhead the rest of the trail is basically downhill at a pretty manageable grade, which makes it a fun and fast descent. The last mile and a half are mostly on an open hillside, which continues to allow for great views of the surrounding areas. This makes it a great trail for hikes at sunrise or sunset, although it can get pretty hot on summer afternoons (south facing, not much shade). The very end of the trail finishes up with a couple of small switchbacks, and then the trail ends at Suncrest Drive.
