Sheltowee Trace NRT: Section 27

This section of Sheltowee Trace follows the Cumberland River south for a challenging, but visually rewarding out-and-back adventure. Be well prepared for a long day, there are few intersections and no easy way out. Monitor your stamina and turn around before you're exhausted. What hikers spend in exertion, they more than receive back in the views of this beautiful area that holds hundreds of waterfalls during the wet season or any time after a rain. The trail crosses many small streams and this is a good indication that a waterfall is nearby. You cannot always see them from the trail due to the dense forest. Just listen and let your ears guide you to them; most of them are only a few steps off the trail. Section 27 continues through Cumberland Falls State Park. If you go across the bridge at Dog Slaughter Creek, the approximately 0.4 miles between it and the boundary get notably rougher the closer you get to the park.
