Description
The Charlton Lake Loop is a 20-mile route in the Deschutes National Forest southwest of Bend, Oregon. Taking the Jim Weaver Loop Trail #3590, the route skirts the eastern shore of Waldo Lake, one of the largest natural lakes in Oregon. Combining Charlton Lake Trail, Lily Lake Trail, and Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), it forms a scenic loop across relatively flat terrain through forests of Pacific silver fir and mountain hemlock. This route follows multi-use trails that are open to running, hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding (mountain bikes are not permitted on the Pacific Crest Trail). Charlton Lake is a popular lake for non-motorized fishing. A number of scenic, primitive campsites are available along the western shore, making this a perfect destination for an overnight getaway. WHEN TO VISITAugust-November brings prime huckleberries and more opportunities for solitude. June-July are the worst months for mosquitos. CONSIDERATIONSThe area is notorious for mosquitoes in the summer, so bring a bug net and bug spray when you visit.PERMITS AND PASSESA Northwest Forest Pass may be required for parking.
