From the north parking area, take the AT Connector Trail (Blue) until you reach the Iris Trail marked with red blazes. The Iris Trail runs north and south in the southern part of High Point State Park. Turn left and follow the trail southward along a wide and well-maintained path. Passing a few access trails to Rutherford Lake, the trail has great views of the lake at a few points. Once past the lake, the trail becomes more narrow and rocky. The trail will cross the Appalachian Trail and continues for about 3/4 of a mile until it reaches the Appalachian Trail again. Turn onto the Appalachian Trail and head north. The trail crosses the Iris Trail forming a figure eight loop. About a half mile past this junction is the Rutherford Shelter Trail. The shelter is a good place to stop for lunch. This next section of the Appalachian trail is very rocky and difficult but has great views to the east. Follow for another 3 miles until you reach the AT Connector Trail (Blue) and the Iris Trail (both share the same path). Turn right and remain on the AT Connector Trail (Blue) to the parking lot.
