Loop
The lovely state park of Shore Acres makes a perfect starting point for exploring the coastline west of Coos Bay. After visiting the spectacular botanical gardens, the short loop along the north shore between Shore Acres and Sunset Bay State Park is an outstanding way to experience this park. Starting either along the fence just north of the observation deck or at the northwest corner of the large parking lot, the trail meanders along the bluff overlooking the rocks and beaches below. There are several fenced overlooks and benches for contemplating the action of the waves below. Sea lions are often seen hauled out here, and there are a few picturesque but distant views of the Cape Arago lighthouse and Sunset Bay. About a mile from the parking area the trail hits a junction to either go left and continue on to Sunset Bay or go right to return via the old entrance road to the Simpson estate that flourished here in the early 20th century. This easy trail is not only the best in this park, but it may be one of the top five on the entire Oregon coast!
