Loop
This loop starts and ends at the Harold W. Rice Memorial Park. The route proceeds up Waipoli Road for 8 miles before heading left onto the Mamane Trail. From the Mamane Trail turn left and start the climb up ridge on the Skyline Trail with it's amazing views. At the end of the Skyline Trail proceed to the Skyline Access past the world famous observatories and then the Haleakala Summit at 10,023 ft. Once you are finished enjoying the scenery from the summit, reverse the route back down the Skyline Access to the Skyline Trail. At the end of the Skyline Access trail take a tour of the Haleakala Ridge Trail and the Boundary Trail back down the Waipoli Road to Rice Memorial Park.
Haleakala, "House of the Sun," holds a sacred place in Hawaiian history. Tradition tells of the early Hawaiian people who sought the isolation of the Haleakala wilderness for cerimomial purposes, instruction, and family reasons.
