Mount Wilson Trail Loop

The Mount Wilson Trail Loop is a 20-mile route located in the San Gabriel Mountains, east of Sierra Madre. It begins with the Mount Wilson Trail, the oldest route to Mount Wilson's summit. As it ascends Little Santa Anita Canyon and makes its way up to Mount Wilson Observatory, it offers stunning views of the San Gabriel front range. It is a challenging trek that includes two long and strenuous ascents and two moderate descents. Suitable for trail running, hiking, and backpacking, this route can be completed in a day, or it can be part of an overnight trip. Parking is available in the nearby residential neighborhood. Be sure to read the parking signs and check for regulations. Take the Mount Wilson Trail all the way up to Skyline Park / Mount Wilson. Water, snacks, and bathrooms may be available at Mount Wilson Observatory and Cosmic Cafe, but call ahead to confirm amenities and seasonal closures (see "additional information" below). From the Mount Wilson Recreation Area Road, take the Sturtevant Trail to Sturtevant Falls. At the junction just above Chantry Flats, take the Winter Creek Trail back to the Mount Wilson Trail.
