Big Mountain is a great area to hike. It is swallowed in rolling mountains so you get a sense of wilderness while still being very close to Salt Lake City. This trial is not too difficult and is family appropriate. It is also great for mountain biking, and rather popular. So stay alert on the trail as you will have hikers and bikers passing frequently. The trail starts at the lower parking lots on a bend of the road. The trail climbs steadily the entire hike. There are open vistas of the rolling mountains the entire hike. You really forget how close to the sprawling city you are. The trail is on the old Mormon Pioneer trail, built in 1847 when they first entered the valley. This short leg of the trail ends at the pass. What is nice about this hike is that you can do it the way we have described, bottom up; or top down,or shuttled if you have two cars and only want to do a mile and a half jaunt. Again, this is a great little hike for an afternoon. If you want to get out and stretch your legs and get out of the city, this is a great place to come.
