Loop
I created this lollipop loop using the Western States Trail and Quarry Trail to total an approximately 20-mile hike from and back to Overlook Park in Auburn. Prepare to enjoy tons of natural beauty out on these trails! There are multiple opportunities to experience silence and solitude, especially if heading out to start earlier in the morning (and if you do, a sunrise through the mountain peaks will be a nice bonus!). The terrain varies from flat long stretches to hills, rocks, and roots and with some challenges ascending and descending sections. With the American River running through much of this route, there are several opportunities to go to the river bank to enjoy the meditative sounds of flowing water - you might even consider taking a dip to cool off!
The historical Wester States 100 trail race is held on parts of this particular route - look for the signs and consider reading up about this awesome race while planning your trip to run/hike/walk here. It's neat to imagine the racers pushing their limits through the same trails!
