There and Back
As soon as you hike out of the parking lot the route crosses the Hudson river over a suspension bridge. Soon after there is Lake Jimmy, which in winter if completely frozen can be crossed skipping the trail around the lake, but do it at your own risk. It is recommended to use the trail instead. The route goes through a few creeks and Opalescent River. Opalescent River crossing would be around 3.8 miles from the trailhead. Be cautious of the river crossing. There was a bridge here which was destroyed. In peak winter it may be frozen enough to cross easily, otherwise it may be impassable if water levels are high. Check recent trail reports and NY DEC site for backcountry warnings before attempting this. There are a few other brooks (lower twin brook and skylight brook) and stream crossings in the route as well which may be impassable if water level is high when done outside winter. The East River trail part of this route is a marked trail, once it switches towards Allen mountain summit after about 5 miles in, it is a herd path.
