Description
Starting at lake level, intersect a well-worn doubletrack road leading south. After 2 miles, this turns directly east and steepens to switchbacks through sheer cliffs with great exposure out of the Rincon Oxbow canyon. It then meanders through spectacular sandstone structures and mini-canyons to gain the ridge between Iceberg Canyon and the Rincon. I found the switchbacks great for technical hiking and then the upper reaches easy to pace out as the trail is well located and skirts sand dunes and prairie. There is a vast variety of desert wildlife - coyote, lizards, dung beetles, and birds. I did this at sunrise four times during our week on Lake Powell because the heat can be oppressive after 10 a.m.
