Continental Divide Trail: Montana-Idaho Section 27

The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail spans nearly 3,100 miles across 5 states from Mexico to Canada, traversing a vast array of different environments and landscapes along the way. The CDT can be completed as a single thru-hike that will take 4 to 6 months, or by section-hiking smaller segments. The Montana-Idaho portion of the CDT features nearly 1,000 miles of diverse mountain terrain. You'll pass alongside the lofty peaks of the Anaconda, Bitterroot and Beaverhead Mountains; walk through the rugged and remote Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex; and finally arrive at the "Crown of the Continent" that is Glacier National Park. In this guide we'll take a closer look at Montana-Idaho Section 27.Section 27 begins just west of the small town of East Glacier. In town hikers will find a small but adequate grocery store to resupply at, dining options, and lodging including an inexpensive hostel popular with thru-hikers.Once out of town you'll follow a brushy trail through Blackfoot Confederacy Land (permit required) until it turns into doubletrack. A short but steep climb leads to the first good views of Section 27. Not long after this you'll come to the boundary of Glacier National Park. A permit is required for backcountry camping, but many hikers will wait until arriving at Two Medicine to sort out permits.The CDT follows the Mt Henry Trail. The Head (7,293') is prominent to the left of trail. After crossing a small stream you'll climb close to a scenic point (a short side trail leads to the viewpoint). Shortly after you'll begin a long descent with stunning views down to Two Medicine Lake and the surrounding mountains. Appistoki Falls is worth the short side trip towards the end of the descent.You'll then have a short road walk to Two Medicine where there is a small general store, campground and ranger station. Be sure to sort out your permits here if you are continuing north through the park.
