The 48-mile point-to-point journey from Santiam Pass to Olallie Lake, along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), offers an unforgettable backpacking experience. Starting at Highway 20 (Santiam Pass) and concluding at the Olallie Lake Resort, this route traverses the Cascade crest through the stunning Mount Jefferson Wilderness. Hikers are treated to scenic mountain views, unique geological features, beautiful lakes, and a variety of campgrounds, making this trek both logistically manageable and visually rewarding. The trail, moderately rated and multi-use, welcomes runners, hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders, though mountain bikes are not permitted on the PCT.As you journey, expect rugged terrain with expansive views of Mount Jefferson (10,502'), Oregon's second-highest peak. LOGISTICSThis journey requires pre-planned transportation, as it is a point-to-point route. Overnight parking may be available at both ends of the trail; check for specific information with the Mount Jefferson Wilderness area managers at Santiam Pass and Olallie Lake Resort. PERMITSPermits are required for backcountry camping in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness area. OLALLIE LAKE RESORTThe resort offers 10 cabins, a general store, and wooden rowboats for rent.
