Description
This is a multi-use trail and hikers may encounter cyclists on the trail. Starting at the trail hub by the WPA structure with Stepdown, the trail turns left and into a short straight before Stepdown continues straight as Chimneys branches off to the left. It turns to the left and passes an old WPA structure before diving downhill with large rollers into a natural berm. This area is a great spot for foraging pawpaws in September. The trail wanders back and forth on the hill as it gradually descends. It bottoms out in a right hand turn and stays flat before the climb that passes under the takeoff platform for Hay Loft. Watch for riders going down the takeoff ramp. The trail curves up the hill to the gravel and then passes under the takeoff ramp. The trail soon leads to an old explosives storage bunker from the days when an underground quarry operated in the area. The trail meanders through the trees before a mild climb to one of the trail hubs along the gravel. Turn right before the gravel begins for the main XC climb to the top and riders will pass the remains of an old farmhouse. The climb is gentle and generally parallels the gravel trail as both contour left around the hill. Chimneys ends when it rejoins the Crushed Limestone Trail at the top of the hill with the parking lot visible across Huntoon Road.
