The Pilot Mountain State Park website best describes this trail as a moderately sloped hiking trail that begins at the picnic area and meanders along Horne Creek with many varieties of spring wildflower. You can make a loop by returning to the picnic area on the park road.
I found this trail to be the perfect trail for a nice mid-day hike. The canopy keeps the area cool from the sun, especially when you get close to the river. The trail is well marked with blue circle blazes.
Along the Yadkin River, there is a spot where you can view a bald eagle's nest across the river--bring your binoculars (I was able to see two young eaglets in the nest).
I recommend hiking out-and-back. Don't take the road back to the starting point. It always amazes me to see what I missed on the return trip.
