Description
The Desolation Trail is a popular hike that starts out from the south side of Millcreek Canyon. This trail goes 10 miles up the canyon and east toward Dog and Desolation lakes and is one of the longest hikes in the Wasatch. Most people do not attempt the 20-mile round-trip journey but simply head up to the overlook, which peers west onto Salt Lake City. This 4-mile round-trip hike is a perfect hike for the after-work crowd and allows you to bring your dogs along. The shaded southern side of the canyon is best on hot sunny days in the summer, but it can get chilly in the spring and autumn. There are decent wildflowers in the early part of the summer and autumn color once it cools down. The trail is somewhat steep, but nothing crazy considering the area; be prepared for the many switchbacks. The trail itself has some sections that could be slightly dangerous if you don't pay attention to a few exposed and steep sidewalls. Just like the other hikes in Millcreek Canyon, you must pay a $3 fee on the way out, but it's another easy way to access the Mount Olympus Wilderness and is close to town. There is plenty of parking, but sometimes it's not enough for the heavy crowds. Luckily there are a ton of other trailheads nearby. On odd numbered days you can let your dogs off of their leashes.
