Pena Adobe Loop Trail

The Pena Adobe Loop Trail is a short thigh burner of a hike that climbs from the historical Pena Adobe Park to the hills overlooking Lagoon Valley Park.The trail begins at a small foot bridge at the far side of the Pena Adobe Park lawn. This bridge remains hidden from the park and historical area, though as you approach the edge of the park near the freeway, it becomes visible, crossing the small creek and leading hikers to the rolling undeveloped hills. A brisk climb up single track switchbacks leads to the high point. Lagoon Valley Park offers a variety of trails, and hikers can adjust their route to account for the distance and difficulty they are seeking. A few more rolling peaks along the ridgeline offers picturesque views of trees and the surrounding landscape, making the traffic down below feel much more infantismally small compared to when the noise drowned out the first section of trail. A table and viewing platform offer a shady spot to catch one's breath and take in the views over the spacious regional park. From here, various use trails descend down the side of the hill. Look closely and the single track leading back to Pena Adobe Park is visible, otherwise hikers can walk along the shoulderless park road below.Return to the park, completing a loop trail slightly over 1 mile in distance.Parking is free inside Pena Adobe Park and $5 inside Lagoon Valley Park. Each park has its own rules and open hours. Bathrooms, water, and a historical museum and grounds open limited hours are available at Pena Adobe Park.
