Description
Parkview Mountain (12,297') is an impressive and prominent mountain that happens to be the highest in the Rabbit Ears Range. It is a relatively easy hike to reach the summit, but of course requires a fair amount of elevation gain. The trail begins from Highway 125 and Willow Creek Pass. Be sure to pack water as there may not be any sources aside from seasonal snowmelt. From the pass the trail gently ascends. You'll follow a forested ridgeline until you begin to break above treeline. Once out of the forest the trail steepens and starts to switchback its way up. You'll eventually gain the summit ridge of Parkview Mountain, which you'll follow all the way to the top. There is a small summit shelter atop the mountain. It was built in 1916, and may be the highest-elevation fire observatory ever built in the US. On a clear day the views from the top are amazing and Include vistas of the Flattops, Gore Range, Ten Mile Range, Collegiates, and the Front Range. After enjoying your time on the summit, you'll want to head down. There is a different option for the descent if you're feeling adventurous. You could continue across the summit ridge, then work your way cross-country down to a 4x4 road. This road will then lead down the mountain and back out to the highway near Willow Creek Pass. Otherwise, return via the trail you took up.
