Description
The Point Imperial Trail is the perfect hike to round out a trip on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. This easy out-and-back trail is perfect for any hiker, and its grand views of Marble Canyon and Mount Hayden are highly rewarding. Although the trail is narrow and can get muddy when wet, it is easy from start to finish. From the Point Imperial Overlook parking lot you will find Ken Patrick Trail to the southwest and Point Imperial Trail to the north. The start of the trail is a little misleading. Rather than hiking along the rim, the trail sends you north into a thinly forested area burned in the Outlet Fire of 2000 and through a brushy meadow. Although a view of the rim would be nice, the stroll through the woods is quiet and peaceful. The ponderosa here are extremely tall! In May you may get lucky with a light dusting of snow. It makes the hike that much more magical. About halfway through the trail you'll come to Woolsey Point, which is a perfect opportunity to stop for some photos. From here you can continue along the rim, back through a forested area, and all the way to the Saddle Mountain Overlook. Looking for a long day or overnight trek? Continue to Nankoweap Creek.
