Description
Silica Dome is a prominent sandstone formation within Valley of Fire State Park, named so because the sand grains that form it are almost pure silica. This short hike leads to the top of the dome and a stellar view of the surrounding area including Fire Canyon and even distant Lake Mead. While this isn't an official trail, the hike follows a well trodden path to the base of the dome where some minor (easy) scrambling is required to top out. An added bonus is that this area of the park seems to be considerably quieter than others, so if you are looking to avoid the crowds this may be the hike for you!The hike begins near the parking area at the end of Fire Canyon Road. Locate the vault toilet and follow the gravel road that takes off behind it. Silica Dome is prominent in the distance - continue along the road until it becomes obvious that you need to turn off and head for the dome. A user trail can be found here that leads to the dome's base. You'll then need to choose a route to the top. It's an easy scramble, in fact you may not even need to use your hands. From the summit enjoy the wonderful views that stretch deep into the park and Fire Canyon, as well as a glimpse of Lake Mead to the east.
