Description
The WHIN Dike Trail is a 1.3 mile out-and-back walk along flat ground within the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge. The trail starts at a signed pullout along the gravel road down the dike area's eastern edge. From here, a double track - restricted to wildlife refuge vehicles only - heads across the center of the dike area, passing ponds and wetlands, before reaching the mountain base on the opposite side. Over the course of this trail, birds and frogs might be witnessed at the fringes of the ponds. The arid desert mountain landscape creates a beautiful scenic backdrop surrounding the refuge. With its remote location, the trails here are usually pretty quiet and relaxing, though hunting Is permitted on certain days of the week, which visitors might want to avoid if the region's quiet, relaxing environment is the goal.Hikers and walkers can turnaround at the far edge of the trail, or might look to heading south and using the Middle Marsh Dike Trail to complete a loop path back to the trailhead. There are no amenities here however water and bathrooms are available at the Refuge Visitor Center about a mile away.
