Description
Just to the west of Windy Gap, but east of the long craggy face of the lengthy Yellowstone Cliffs, is an unmaintained scramble up the shoulder of Tyee Peak. The Tyee Peak route heads north from its intersection with the Northern Loop Trail, skirting the eastern edge of two mostly frozen lakes (keep your distance). Once past these depressions, reach a minor saddle and climb the steep eastern flank of Tyee Peak. Cross more snow fields and rocky spots. From the wide ridge, take in great views of crystal blue Crescent Lake to the south, the impressively lush meadows and Mt. Rainier. Keep an eye out for goats scampering on the rocks along the Yellowstone Cliffs and deer in the deer browsing in the meadows below.
