There and Back
Starting in the desert at around 6,300 feet, Shepherd Pass Trail begins with a steep ascent through arid foothills, crossing Symmes Creek multiple times before climbing exposed switchbacks toward Anvil Camp. This makes a good first night's camp among the pines if you choose not to push for the pass in one day. From there, the route becomes more rugged, passing alpine meadows and sculpted ravines before reaching the dramatic final push to Shepherd Pass (12,000'). The barrier is a steep gully that usually holds a snowfield into late summer. Beyond the pass, adventurers can head south towards the Williamson Bowl which provides access to two California 14er's, Mount Tyndall and Mount Williamson. Or, continuing west on the Shepherd Pass Trail connects to the John Muir Trail / Pacific Crest Trail at Tyndall Creek.
