Hayden Trail Loop

It's not quite the Rocky Mountains, but Green Mountain in Lakewood is one of the best places for an after-work hike because of its proximity to the city. Only 20 minutes from downtown Denver, it's the closest trail system for many. And the quality does not disappoint, with panoramic views from wide-open slopes and smooth trails that are perfect for a workout hike or run. Some trails are shared with mountain bikers, and others are for hiking only.The name of the open space is William F. Hayden Park on Green Mountain, and it has several trailheads. For hiking or trail running, a convenient starting point is the "Florida Parking" along Alameda Pkwy, and that's where this loop begins. It follows Green Mountain Trail and Hayden Trail to reach the top of the mountain.For a more gradual uphill, hike clockwise, on a short section of Green Mountain Trail to connect with Hayden Trail. Hayden Trail then makes a meandering ascent that is never too steep, to the mountain's upper ridgeline. Scenery along the way is not particularly varied, but views are constantly good on a clear day, toward the Front Range and over the city. The mountainside is mostly prairie grasses and shrubs, but the trail dives into a few small drainages with trees. You may see deer, coyote, birds of prey, or other wildlife as well.On top of the mountain, Hayden Trail joins a gravel road, which is Green Mountain Trail but also the service road to some radio towers. Continue past the towers on the wide track, then turn onto the narrower trail which is signed to return to the parking area. This portion of Green Mountain Trail makes a pretty efficient descent--but still not terribly steep--with excellent views toward downtown Denver, back to the trailhead.
