Description
Shealor Lake is an alpine lake high in the Sierra Nevada lying at the end of a 1.2 mile hike. Beginning at a small parking lot just of Highwy 88 in the Silver Lake area, the hike begins with a climb through forest before emerging at the top of the granite ridge. Views of Silver Lake the south and the sprawling Eldorado National Forest to the the north are breathtaking. From the peak, the trail switches back down the granite slopes, ultimately dropping 500 feet to the Shealor Lake basin. Being a relatively shorter hike, this area is popular for families and amongst backcountry campers. And while the distance may be hikeable with children, visitors should keep in mind that the higher and steeper climb is on the way out.Shealor Lake itself marks the end of the trail, however a couple other smaller nearby lakes as well as seemingly endless granite slopes and landscape provide additional backcountry destinations and camping areas for those looking to explore further. With very little shade, Shealor tends to warm up as the Summer season goes on, making it ideal with swimming. Granite ledges around the lake make for relaxing fishing spots or low platforms to jump into the water from.Aside from a map on a signboard at the parking area, there are no amenities and no water at the parking area or along the trail. The parking area itself holds about a dozen cars. As the appeal of Shealor Lake is that it is a much quieter alternative to other nearby lakes and swimming areas, this small parking area can fill up during summer weekends, with no alternative parking located nearby. Those camping here should be prepared for mosquitoes and a lack of shade. California Campfire Permits are required for any type of burning in the backcountry.
