Description
The Sawtooth and White Cloud wilderness areas of Idaho are some fine roadless areas in the country with significantly less visitation than many similar parts of the Rockies. Many of the trails, however, are fairly long and can be steep due to the terrain. The hike to Titus Lake is a great option in this area for those looking for a fairly short hike that isn't too strenuous and that features a nice lake views. The trailhead is just a mile from Galena Pass and very close to the headwaters of the Salmon River. This is an area known as The Cross, where four of Idaho's wildest mountain ranges meet: the Sawtooth, White Cloud, Smokey, and Boulder mountains. From the large parking area on Highway 75, the trail climbs through white bark pine forest. There are a lot of ups and downs on this trail, and some areas are steep, but overall it is very passable (and very popular) for families with children. After hiking over a ridge, it is a steady trek down into the cirque where the lake sits. The first views of the lake are from about a quarter mile away, and immediately the striking emerald green color stands out. There is a social trail around the lakeshore along with a few favorite swimming areas. The water is very shallow at the beach nearest the approach, but about a third of the way around the lake to the right is a large rock that has deep water (enough for jumping or diving with caution). There is a fire ring and camping spot above the bank on the south side of the lake.
