Description
The Stony Brook Trail has brown blazes and runs through the middle of Stokes State Forest connecting several different trails. It has three good parking areas - Kittle Field, Stony Lake day use area, and the end of Kittle Road, plus small spot to park on side of Sunrise Mountain Road. The trail starts in the northwest at the Blue Mountain Trail, connects to the Silver Mine trail and several trails at Stony Lake including the Lackner, Swenson, Coursen, and the other side of Blue Mountain Trail. It continues on past the Tower trail across Sunrise Mountain road to the Appalachian Trail. Just before the AT, it passes near the Gren Anderson AT shelter. With all the trail intersections, this trail can be used to put together many featured hikes, or to break the Blue Mountain Trail into a shorter loop. The most enchanting part of the trail is the section of the trail between Stony Lake Day Use Area and the end of Kittle Field Road where it follows a very active section of Stony Brook with several beautiful cascades. A lot of this is on a flat forest road. The section of the trail from Stony Lake to the AT is in a nice forest, but is rocky at times as if it were an old stream bed.
