Description
Starting at the Gold Run trailhead, hiking counter clockwise, cross the creek or go south and to the road before catching the trail. Go up a steeper climb and cross a road before going down a long, steady descent through pine trees on single and doubletrack trails. This section follows a small creek to the reservoir. Cross Dutchman Road, the base of the dam, and go up a short steep hillside to reach the prairie above. Continue weaving along the shore, either lower by the lake or higher above it with possible water level adjustments needed. You'll then encounter Custer Trail Campground, crossing another road and continue to follow the shoreline. The next section involves hiking in the pine trees with elevation changes as you go in and out of drainages. Continue on, passing the North Shore Trailhead until going downhill to lake level and a wooden bridge that allows you to cross the creek. The trail runs alongside Deerfield Road and next to/through the picnic area. Hike along a few more undulations and back to the edge of the lake before heading south to the trailhead.
