Border Closure: The US/Canada border originally shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2026, hikers can hike the trail on the U.S. or Canadian sides only and must turn around at the border. It is illegal to cross the international border between Canada and the United States via the Chilkoot Trail. Bennett is accessible only via boat, the White Pass & Yukon Route railway, or by charter floatplane. Permits and reservations are required through Parks Canada between June 1st and September 12th for all day hikes and overnight stays. Reservations must be made in advance. All hikers are must attend a mandatory in-person orientation, prior to beginning the Chilkoot Trail hike. Trail permits will be issued after completion of the orientation. Plan to attend an orientation session within 2 days of beginning the hike. Orientations for hiking the Canadian side are held in Whitehorse, YK.

Description
This route begins and ends in Bennett, BC, after turning around at the Chilkoot Pass on the US-Canada border. From the Bennett trailhead, head south along the eastern shore of Lake Bennett. At 4.1 miles/6.6 kilometers, pass the junction for Bare Loon Lake Campground on the left and continue straight. The trail climbs gently through boreal forest to Lindeman City at 6.5 miles/10.5 kilometers, which features a Parks Canada warden station and campground. From Lindeman City, continue south as the terrain becomes more rugged, climbing past Deep Lake Campground at 9.5 miles/15.3 kilometers. Beyond Deep Lake, the trail enters the sub-alpine zone, reaching Happy Camp Campground at 12.0 miles/19.3 kilometers. From Happy Camp, climb through stark, rocky alpine tundra to reach the Chilkoot Pass warming cabin and the international border monument at 15.8 miles/25.4 kikometers. After reaching the pass, retrace your steps back to the trailhead at Bennett. It is illegal to cross the international border between Canada and the United States via the Chilkoot Trail.
