Description
This is a pretty easy loop to follow even if you don't have a map or GPS - just keep turning left. Start out by following Rocky Ridge Trail. The first 3 miles is gradual uphill on semi-technical singletrack in open pine forest. Rocky Ridge climbs moderately along the south-facing slopes of the Dry Lake Hills, which can get warm in the afternoon. There are good views on occasion across Fort Valley and Flagstaff. The top of Rocky Ridge offers easy connections to the Brookbank and Lower Oldham Trails. At the end of Rocky Ridge, turn left onto Lower Brookbank. This steep, but well-traveled trail climbs into the Dry Lake Hills from Elden Lookout Road. It connects at the upper end to numerous trails in the Dry Lake Hills. There are some amazing views of !Humphreys Peak near the top. From here it's all downhill along Shultz Creek. Schultz Creek Trail is a steady, moderate descent along Schultz Creek (which might be running in the springtime) through pines, aspen and Douglas fir. Birdlife abounds in areas where the creek has water.
