Beaver Bay Shoreline Trail

Beaver Bay Shoreline Trail is a short loop trail in Farragut State Park that connects Beaver Bay Beach with Whitetail Campground. The upper part of the loop follows what was a service road, and it is for the most part enclosed by trees without much in the way of views of Lake Pend Oreille. By contrast, the lower section follows a singletrack that wends its way along the shore of Idlewilde Bay. The lower section is less direct, but it is well worth the short extra distance with the beautiful scenery and numerous places to stop for dip in the lake or to sit along the rocks and take in the view. Both parts of the trail are almost entirely flat, and it makes for a family friendly hike for all ages. If you are returning by the lower trail from Beaver Bay Beach to Whitetail Campground, make sure to turn left at the #69 trail marker, or else you'll have to find an animal trail to make a shortcut back to camp. Beaver Bay Beach and nearby Buttonhook Bay are both excellent destinations to swim, fish, or enjoy the sunset at Lake Pend Oreille's southwest corner. Pets and glass containers are prohibited at both locations. Farragut State Park is a large complex with seven campgrounds and trails that link various parts of the park. During the busy summer season youth groups make use of the park, but the facilities remain open to other visitors year round. It was once a World War II naval training facility, where submarines made use of the depths of Lake Pend Oreille. Farragut State Park was named after David Farragut, the first admiral of the U.S. Navy, who was appointed during the Civil War. It became a state park in 1965.
